What to pack for La Fortuna (from someone who lives here)
Every week someone asks me, "What should I bring?" La Fortuna is rainforest country. One day can include sunshine, a downpour, a muddy trail, a waterfall swim, and a hot spring soak. Pack for all of it, and pack light.

The non-negotiables
1. A packable rain jacket
It rains a lot here, especially in the afternoons during green season. A light jacket that folds small is better than a heavy one you'll leave at the hotel.
See my pick →2. Shoes that can get wet
Trails get muddy and waterfall paths are slippery. Bring something with real grip that dries fast. Leave the white sneakers at home.
See my pick →3. Reef-safe sunscreen
The sun is strong this close to the equator, even when it's cloudy. Mineral sunscreen is kinder to the rivers and hot springs too.
See my pick →Really glad you brought it
- A dry bag for your phone on waterfall, boat, and rafting tours.
- Quick-dry clothes. Cotton stays damp for days in this humidity.
- A swimsuit (or two). Hot springs, waterfalls, rivers. You'll be in the water a lot.
- A light long-sleeve layer for cooler evenings and bugs.
- A reusable water bottle. Staying hydrated on hikes is a must.
Leave it at home
- Heavy jeans (they never dry)
- Fancy shoes
- Too many outfits. Laundry services are easy to find in town.
